The HP LaserJet Pro M225dw is a business-oriented laser printer that prints, copies, scans and faxes. It features auto duplex for printing and scanning, has a touchscreen and boasts an advertised print speed of 25 pages per minute (ppm). In the LaserJet Pro product line, the M225dw falls in between the M125nw, which lacks the fax function and touchscreen, and the M425dw, which has a higher-capacity paper tray and faster speeds.
Design & Build
The M225dw's sizable dimensions (45 x 40 x 37 cm) mean you'll have to clear some space for it in your office. The paper tray juts out from the bottom-front of the printer and doesn't retract. Of course, that makes sense for this kind of machine, which is designed to be sedentary in the first place. The tray holds 250 sheets of A4 paper and impractically doesn't slide any further outwards.
We usually love to see LCD touchscreens on printers, but that's not entirely the case here. The M225dw has a spacious 7.6 cm display, but it can be laborious to use; we often had to try several times before it would recognise our touch commands. Needless to say, entering our Wi-Fi code wasn't exactly a walk in the park.
There are several ways of printing: via a USB connection, Ethernet or Wi-Fi, and there's a USB 2.0 port where you can insert a USB key and print documents stored on it directly.
In today's world, acceptable print quality for text is the norm. That's why we also test images, such as graphs, that are sometimes embedded in texts to see how well they turn out. Here they came out pretty well with correctly reproduced nuances and consistent quality. Text itself is easy legible.
The LaserJet Pro M225dw prints quickly at 26 ppm and 15 ppm in duplex.
Scan & Copy
This is a speedy printer that takes just 9 seconds to scan a 10 x 15 cm photograph and 11 seconds to scan an A4 document. The automatic document feeder holds 35 pages, making it easier to scan and copy several-page documents.
Copy mode is equally fast, at 10 seconds per A4 document. The copy quality is just satisfactory and doesn't transcribe all the nuances in shading.
Power Use & Noise
We measured the M225dw's power consumption at 4 W on standby and 510 W while running. We've seen better, but that's still less than average for a laser printer. It produced 54 dB(A) of noise while printing, so it will definitely be noticeable in a work space, but not necessarily annoying.
